What Is Colonic Irrigation

The Colonic Irrigation Procedure

The procedure itself is termed is somewhat invasive as it is an internal treatment, it is carried out at many establishments, both private clinics and some beauty spas and health clubs..

The procedure is relatively simple (medically speaking) a speculum device is inserted into your anus; a tube is then passed through the speculum so it enters the rectum.

A warm irrigation fluid is then passed through the tube and into the colon, as the fluid flows through the colon, the lower intestine will expand, this, although painless will feel strange and possibly uncomfortable for a while. Once the intestine is full of fluid, it is then released, as the fluid flows back out of the body, any trapped fecal matter is washed away with it.

There is no smell and the whole process is usually very discreet and hygienic.

Colonic irrigation can be helpful for suffers of constipation, IBS, Bloating and flatulence, however it is not suitable for those suffering with Crohns disease, heart or renal problems.

Is Colonic Irrigation Safe

It is important to only have the procedure carried out by trained personnel, although rare, there have been cases of the colon or rectum being torn by incorrect insertion of the tubes etc. The majority of treatments are carried out without causing any problems to the patient.

Is There A Recovery Period

In most cases patients will feel re-energised after irrigation, and are ready to go back to work or get on with their day straight after treatment, but if you do feel tired after the treatment, do not worry, as it will soon pass.
